Dr. Katherine Frels is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is the small grains breeder for Nebraska, and her research focuses on the genetic improvement of winter wheat, barley, and triticale for producers in the region. Her goal is to improve yield, end-use quality, disease resistance, and sustainability in each of these small grain crops to create new opportunities for producers to improve their economic and environmental outlooks. Her expertise includes phenomic and genomic evaluation of multi-location breeding trials to leverage genotype by environment interactions especially rainfall gradients. As part of her wheat research efforts, she is a co-leader for the Coalition for Grain Fiber, an initiative dedicated towards increasing the dietary fiber content of crops such as wheat.
